The installation of hygienic wall cladding for complex hospital hygiene projects is one of our specialities. Wexham Park Hospital is one of our recent projects that proved to be a challenge, but we delivered the fantastic result as specified by the client.

Wexham Park Hospital was originally constructed on the site of a Victorian mansion known as Wexham Park. The first of the buildings was initially completed in 1965, with the design winning an award from the Royal Institute of British Architects. Further buildings were constructed over the years with an expanded recovery centre completed in June 2013 and a new A&E Unit being opened on 3 April 2019.

Coloured Hygienic Wall Cladding Brief

For this project, we were approached by T&B Contractors to support them in delivering on this comprehensive refurbishment project.

The project was to include multiple areas, each requiring specific cladding techniques to meet hygiene standards. This included walls, hand washing stations, corridors, toilets and separate shower facilities.

The Solution

The client wanted to create a sleek modern finish throughout the ward with different splashes of colour for each wardroom, helping to brighten up and differentiate each of the rooms.

There were clear communications with both the client and the architect throughout the project with them making the final decision on the product specifications. The contractor was then on hand to make sure the choice worked from a construction point of view and was viable for the hospital.

Following the initial site visits and discussions, it was decided that the team would use a range of coloured Trovex panels which included Limelight, Petrol, Amber, Clover, Energy and finally White.

As part of the installation, there were some challenging areas that required the team to install the hygienic wall cladding at high levels with highly intricate boxing angles. Each of the box elements required the wall cladding to be pre-cut and thermoformed to exactly match the box shape and dimensions.

In some cases, the panels required at least three angles to be thermoformed to precisely meet the shape. Although the panels could have been cut into smaller pieces and welded or siliconed, it was felt the sleek finish would be better achieved with the thermoforming approach.

To achieve the hygienic result that all hospital require, attention to detail is paramount. Our team of installers carefully worked their way around the ward to ensure all thermoformed hygienic panels perfectly matched to dramatically reduce the need for welded joints.

The Conclusion

Our team worked hard and alongside the contractor to make sure this was completed on schedule.  We are delighted to say that the contractor and the client were extremely happy with our team’s hard work and with the final result and finish.
