Background

The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) is a globally recognised institution at the forefront of research and postgraduate education in public and global health.

To support its critical work, LSHTM requires laboratory environments that meet the highest standards of hygiene, durability, and efficiency. Goss Environmental Coatings were proud to be entrusted with supplying and installing a reinforced coating system in a laboratory space, used for research activities and sample storage, as a mock up for upcoming major works.

This project was part of LSHTM’s ongoing commitment to maintaining state-of-the-art facilities.

Scope of Work

The project involved the supply and expert installation of Sika AL12 Sikagard Reinforced Coating System for the walls and AL11 Sikagard System for the ceiling in a mock up area.

Every stage of the process, from initial masking and surface preparation to the final handover, was carried out with precision and care.

The scope of work included:

• Protection of existing fixtures and meticulous surface repair, ensuring a flawless final result.
• Application of bonding primers, embedment coats, and topcoats to both walls and ceilings to enhance durability and hygiene.
• Installation of PVC coving in internal corners on the left-hand side of the room for a seamless finish
• Application of Sikaflex AT Connection to internal corners on the right-hand side to ensure a flexible and robust seal.
• Embedding of Reemat Premium and Reemat Lite Matting to reinforce the coating system for long-lasting performance into a 403W embedment coat.
• Installation of Sikagard 407W top coat to the AL12 and AL11 systems.

The Solution

Goss approached this project with very careful planning, ensuring minimal disruption to LSHTM’s ongoing operations. Working in a live environment required thoughtful coordination, with protective barriers erected to maintain the safety and efficiency of both LSHTM personnel and the Goss installation team.

This installation was undertaken as a sample application to test the coating product’s suitability prior to starting larger-scale projects. It provided LSHTM with a real-world demonstration of the system’s effectiveness, durability, and aesthetic finish. Often, such mock-up or sample areas are the best way to ‘square the circle’ ahead of major upcoming project work. Dry samples alone often don’t tell the whole story.

The Results

The application of the Sika Sikagard Reinforced Coating System delivered a high-performance, hygienic, and durable surface that exceeded LSHTM’s expectations which can then be tested and interrogated for suitability and performance by the Client.
