St Angela’s Ursuline School undertook a time critical summer refurbishment project of their WCs. The project created a challenge to deliver high-quality hygienic wall cladding in a tight space and in a short duration.
Built in 1862, the two original rooms housing the WCs were narrow and contained 8 and 10 small toilet cubicles. Each cubical, along with the main room and sink areas required hygienic wall cladding to be retro fitted over the existing tiled walls as part of a refurbishment programme by refurb specialist AJS.
Retro fitting to an existing substrate is a more technical and complicated procedure. Stringent preparation processes needed to be undertaken to allow the new cladding to be installed to the required high standards.
The Solution
During the initial preparation of the hygienic wall cladding installation, the existing tiled substrate needed to be carefully examined for loose areas and cleaned thoroughly, removing any contaminants. It is important to ensure that all the existing tiles are securely bonded. All holes and spaces must be filled (and dried) to give an overall smooth and flush surface, enabling a high quality weld.
Trovex Hygienic Wall Cladding
Once this phase of the installation had been carefully completed, the chosen hygienic wall cladding, Trovex Diamond, from the Brilliance range, in ‘Titanium’ colour, was expertly installed.
The thermoforming machine needed for the installation required adequate space to bend the wall cladding to the specifications. Space in the WC was extremely tight, and the other trades were also on site at the same time, therefore the installation team had to think ‘creatively’. The installers ensured the hygienic wall cladding was thermoformed and installed to the highest standards, whilst programme objectives were met.
The installation team cooperated closely with the other trades and extended their working hours accordingly. This flexibility was key to completing the project on time.
The Benefits
The choice of the Trovex Diamond range of hygienic wall cladding, provides St Angela’s Ursuline School with a premium grade material, perfect for the environment. A strong and impact resistant surface, that protects against spills and stains is ideal for WCs and washroom environments. The smooth antibacterial cladding surface is easy to clean and maintain. With an interesting choice of high gloss dark grey sheets – the aesthetic effect is fantastic too!
In addition, this hygienic wall cladding has the benefit of being able to be installed on a range of existing substrates. In this type of time limited retro fit, the use of this solution saves a great deal time. As long as substrates are flat, dry, can be largely cleared of 2nd fix – there is a way! If there is a will!
The project was fast tracked and completed on time and on budget. The hygienic cladding provides the school with an extended lifecycle for future refurbishments due to the quality of materials used.
It’s always important to plan Summer refurbishments well in advance. Demand is very high over this period and specialist subcontractors are extremely busy. Additionally, with recent variable economic climates, the lead time on specialist materials has become more extended.
With careful planning, ‘Summer holidays’ can be utilised to extensively transform washroom environments in schools, colleges or universities. Procuring the very best hygienic cladding products and contracting specialist installers such as Goss Coatings completes the transformation.
