Hygiene & Protection for Day Case Surgical Unit at Hereford County Hospital
Project Overview
Hygienic wall systems and wall protection were essential stages in the construction of this state-of-the-art Surgical Unit.
The £21 million Day Case Surgical Unit at Hereford County Hospital marks a significant investment in the region’s healthcare infrastructure. This cutting-edge facility is designed to address the growing demand for day surgery services, providing a dedicated environment for procedures that do not require overnight stays.
The primary goals of this new unit include enhancing the patient experience, modernising healthcare delivery, and creating a dementia-friendly environment. By offering a specialised and efficient day surgery service, patients will benefit from shorter wait times, streamlined procedures, and quicker recovery times.
This comprehensive and well-planned project ensures that the new Day Case Surgical Unit not only meets current healthcare needs but also sets a foundation for future advancements, benefiting both patients and healthcare professionals.
Project Details
The scope of the project was extensive, involving the installation of specialised wall protection and bactericide systems to ensure a high standard of hygiene and durability. The primary components of the project included the installation of Construction Specialties Acrovyn Smooth Wall Protection and the Acrovyn Bactericide System, including splashbacks, across various key areas of the hospital.
These installations were crucial for maintaining a sterile and safe environment. Full-height bactericide panels in Pure White were used in critical areas, while Snow White was chosen for full and half-height panels in other areas, and Dove Grey for splashbacks.
Areas Covered
The installation covered several critical areas within the hospital, ensuring comprehensive protection and hygiene standards. The selected areas included:
Dirty Utility
Clean Utility
Scrub Rooms
Theatres
Recovery Wards
Cleaners Rooms
WC’s & Showers
Prep Rooms
These areas were prioritised to maximise the efficiency of medical operations and enhance the overall cleanliness and safety of the hospital environment.
Installation Required
A significant aspect of the project was the meticulous installation of hygienic wall systems and bactericide systems. The materials used included 108 textured sheets and 268 smooth sheets. This precise and extensive installation not only enhances the durability and hygiene of the facility but also contributes to a safer and more pleasant environment for both patients and staff.
Challenges and Solutions
One of the significant challenges faced during this project was the need to work within a tight schedule and coordinate with other trades operating simultaneously on-site. Additionally, there were varying ceiling heights in every room and the use of three different sheets and colours, which necessitated detailed discussions with the contractor to ensure accuracy in each room.
As the hygienic systems contractor for the project, the Goss team expertly managed these complexities. Unlike some projects, no crash rails or trims were used within the operating theatre or recovery ward, and there was no post-installation silicone applied by our team (handled by others post-clean). The vertical joints featured colour-matched silicone, and silicone joints were used throughout with thermoformed corners. The use of bactericide sheets was particularly beneficial in maintaining hygiene standards in the main clean areas. Acrovyn Bactericide actively eliminates bacteria upon contact, contributing to the prevention of Healthcare-Associated Infections and enhancing patient safety.
Timescale for Completion
The project had a very tight programme, managed efficiently by the experienced Speller Metcalfe site team. The main contractor required a number of visits to complete the installation effectively and to budget. The contractor ensured that all aspects of the installation were carried out with precision and within the planned schedule.
Conclusion
This comprehensive installation of hygienic wall systems ensures that the new Day Case Surgical Unit at Hereford County Hospital, built by Speller, experts in healthcare construction, meets modern healthcare standards, benefiting both patients and staff.
The completion of the Day Case Surgical Unit at Hereford County Hospital represents a significant advancement in the region’s healthcare capabilities. The integration of hygienic wall systems and wall protection systems was a critical component in creating a state-of-the-art, safe, and efficient surgical environment. Despite the challenges of tight scheduling and complex installations, the Goss team executed the project successfully, setting a new standard for healthcare facilities. This unit not only addresses current healthcare demands but also positions the hospital to continue improving patient care and operational efficiency in the future.
