Hygienic Coatings for University Hospital Crosshouse, Kilmarnock, Scotland

University Hospital Crosshouse is operated by NHS Ayrshire and Arran, providing a wide range of services. It is a large district general hospital, situated two miles from Kilmarnock town center.

The hospital is also home to the National Cochlear Implant service. Our team worked on a coatings project for the containment level lab 3 and lobby walls and ceilings via specialist contractor Medical Air Technology (MAT).

Our works were part of a larger project, commissioned by the board. The project was to carry out a major refurbishment of an existing laboratory and upgrading it to Containment Level 3 (CL3) status.

The Solution

CL3 is the highest containment level in common use in the UK, thus they require specialist safety and hygiene features to be incorporated into the design to ensure the highest level containment.

Our task was to install the CS Armouglaze hygienic coating system, with heavy fiberglass reinforcement, to the walls and ceilings of the hospital’s laboratory, upgrading the fabric to a suitable Containment Level 3 (CL3) standard.

The CS Wallglaze Armourglaze reinforced specialist coatings system is designed for added durability, robustness, chemical resistance, resistance to air pressure variations, and elastomeric flexibility. These characteristics are vitally important for laboratories of this type, which deal with a wide range of pathogens, including coronaviruses.

After the initial design appraisal, the full strip out of the laboratory has been carried out, ensuring the laboratory surfaces were prepared for the refurbishment and the installation of the hygienic coating.

An absolute key in this process has been attention to detail, continuous inspection of work at each stage (the FG Heavy Armouglaze system is a complex and multi-layered application and incorporates an integrated PVC coving system, including ‘Cutting corners’ preformed trimitres and proprietary coving installed to create more robust and cleanable junctions).

The work was done within a two-week period, including weekend work because the client was working on a tight fast-track program.
