Interview with Nick Collins, Head of Sales at Sika

Interview with Nick Collins, Head of Sales at Sika

March 12, 2025

The coatings industry is evolving rapidly, with increasing demands for hygiene, sustainability, and durability.

As regulations tighten and market expectations rise, companies must stay ahead of the curve by innovating and adapting. Sika, a global leader in specialty chemicals and construction solutions, has been at the forefront of these changes, particularly in the hygienic coatings sector. Goss Environmental Coatings has been working with SIKA products – including the former Liquid Plastics range of high-quality hygienic coatings – since 1988 and highly values the innovative, high-tech, and specialist construction solutions offered by this global organisation.

In this exclusive interview, Nick Collins, Head of Sales at Sika, shares his insights into the world of hygienic coatings, discussing industry challenges, sustainability, and the latest innovations shaping the sector. With years of experience in sales and product development, Nick provides a behind-the-scenes look at how Sika is responding to market needs and regulatory shifts.

He also explores the role of client collaboration in delivering high-performance solutions. From product development to future industry trends, this conversation offers valuable insights for professionals navigating the ever-changing landscape of coatings technology.

Can you share a project or client experience that challenged your understanding of coatings and taught you something entirely new?

Every new project in the hygienic coatings industry presents a distinct challenge due to the multitude of details that must first be clarified. Our team discusses aspects such as chemical resistance and architectural specifics like profiles and joints, alongside commercial factors such as material delivery timelines and more. Projects like Ann McLaren in Cambridge and UCL ION DRI in London have contributed to the continuous evolution of my understanding of hygienic coatings.

How do you stay on top of industry trends and new innovations in coatings?

Sika’s R&D team monitors relevant changes in the regulatory framework while we are closely observing market demands and industry trends. Most of our discussions focus on market demands and how we can respond to them by collaborating with various stakeholders, such as R&D, Product Management, our colleagues from the Corporate Product Team, Marketing, and HS&EWe have very clear processes around product development and launching one product can take months to ensure it is safe, tested and, where appropriate, certified. Me personally, I really enjoy spending time with our clients and contractors to understand their key challenges, how we can help them with product selection, or even perhaps designing a new solution (I leave that bit to the clever people).

What role does sustainability play in your sales pitch for new products, especially given increasing environmental concerns in coatings?

We have seen a steady incline in concerns around sustainability and here at Sika we have already outlined our Sika Strategy 2028 which covers three key areas: People, Planet, and Solutions.

In addition to this, one effective approach to achieving sustainability goals in the coatings industry is to emphasise water-based technology. In this regard, we are well-positioned, particularly with our hygienic coatings, as our product line comprises water-based coatings.

You recently launched Sikagard 407 W, can you describe the key benefits of this product in terms of performance, durability, or sustainability compared to previous versions or other market options?

The recent pandemic has led to a considerable rise in the demand for enhanced chemical resistance, particularly in areas where cleaning involves fumigation. This prompted us to explore ways to address this trend. By collaborating with customers like Goss and engaging key decision-makers in the industry, we identified the need for an alternative top coat that offers better chemical resistance. This is why we initiated the development of Sikagard®-407 W with superior chemical resistance.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received – either in your career or in life – and how has it shaped your sales approach?

‘Culture beats strategy’ – I am a firm believer of creating a culture where people are happy and empowered. A fully engaged team is best placed to build lasting relationships to help customers and clients achieve their strategic goals.

If you could wave a magic wand and instantly fix one challenge in the coatings industry, what would it be?

While many coatings today offer antimicrobial properties, the challenge is that they don’t always maintain their effectiveness over time or under harsh conditions (e.g., frequent cleaning, high humidity, or temperature variations).

I’d like to see greater awareness around coatings that are not only long-lasting but also more resistant to wear and tear, whilst still being easy to clean and maintaining their hygienic properties – such as Sikagard®-407 W.

What’s one product or innovation in your career that you’re most proud of? Why does it stand out to you?

Sikagard®-407 W – It has the potential to be a game-changer in the industry.

How do you unwind after a busy day of dealing with product launches and client needs? Any hobbies or quirky habits?

You can’t beat a good book or podcast to disconnect, or maybe watching something light-hearted to laugh and relax. It’s all about managing time and energy the right way.

If you weren’t in sales for coatings, what’s another industry you could see yourself thriving in?

Great question, anything that involves dealing with great people, which is why I’m so happy working for Sika and being in this industry.

What’s the most unexpected place you’ve seen one of your products being used?

That of course is top secret, but sometimes the mystery of this specialist sector is what makes it so rewarding.

What’s your personal ritual or routine that helps you stay energised or focused in your role?

It’s all about the walk and talk, we spend so much time in front of screens that it’s hugely important to take the opportunity out in the fresh air when engaging with clients and colleagues.

If your product could have a “superpower,” what would it be and why?

Well that can only mean Sikagard®-407 W, it has the power to be revolutionary, will you join the revolution?

Thank you Nick
