Interview Questions and Answers
What inspired you to pursue your current path in Hygienic Wall Cladding and Coatings?
The company has always been at the heart of our family.
I worked in some different sectors and industries to gain experience, but always wanted to run the family company at the right time, and indeed, grow it from a lifestyle business to a bigger organisation.
That opportunity, to be independent and carry on that journey, inspired me.
Were there any particular role models who influenced your journey?
I think mainly my parents and family. They all work hard, play hard and have good integrity. They’ve been good role models.
What would you describe as your success habits?
I would have to say, thinking round issues and persistence provide the foundations for success.
What mistakes have you made along the way?
Too many to mention and detail in an interview! And I would need to write an encyclopaedia. But, for every mistake made, it has allowed me to take on board more important knowledge and gain experience on how to get things right the next time.
What are 3 words you would use to describe yourself?
I think they would be determined, stubborn, but I hope in a positive way and fair, well at least I try to be!
What has been the toughest professional decision you have ever had to make?
When I first joined company, coming from a very well-paid salary position, we had a tough couple of years and my wages plummeted as our profits were low. At time I had young family and new mortgage, so some significant debt.
The toughest decision was not to go back to a more comfortable salaried position, when the business was going through shaky period. Persistence to get things on the right path was essential!
What motivates you in tough times?
I would say the simple things, such as spending time with family, walking our dog and appreciating beautiful simplicity. Much of the rest is noise.
I also like listening to inspirational figures on podcasts from many different backgrounds. For example, I recently have listened to podcasts by Djokovic, Kobe Bryant and Jason Fox.
Whose career inspires you?
There are a few people close to me that I have been inspired by, including my brother’s career, my Mum and Dad’s journey with our wall cladding and coatings business, and my late Uncle’s journey.
Then of course there’s the late Queen – that IS resilience!!!
Also, there are various entrepreneurs who have scaled very bravely such as Humphrey Cobbold from Pure Gym.
I am inspired by a lot of different people who have succeeded in sport, business and the Arts.
To be honest, if it has to be said, modern politicians don’t inspire me. Partly, I think that is the fault of the system, as their objectives are always too short-termist.
What has been your most memorable moment?
Many …marriage, the births of our kids and fishing with my brother when we were children. Also, my Nan bringing us Walnut cakes whilst we caught Gudgeon in the Grand Union Canal. Then there’s walking in the snow on a New Year’s Eve in Moscow… But there is not one that stands out above others.
Are there any new initiatives or areas of focus that you’re excited about?
Yes, having a bigger team and the momentum what comes with that… I think that is a very exciting area of focus that is changing continually.
What advice would you give someone starting out?
I would say to be brave, scale up and delegate non-core activities early in the process. Find a niche, focus, be resilient and don’t give up!
Is there anything you can’t let go of, but know you should?
I know I shouldn’t be getting involved in minor issues that other people are more than capable to handle.
What hobbies or activities do you enjoy outside your professional life?
I enjoy a wide range of activities, including playing tennis, pickleball, hill walking, jogging (well, waddling!), watching rugby, reading, and listening to audiobooks.
What would constitute a ‘perfect’ day for you?
The perfect day would be walking our dog, having coffee with my wife, followed by having an interesting and productive day building the empire focusing on proactive tasks.
Then enjoying an early dinner, play some tennis, winning my match, have a cold beer after, come home, sit in the garden… …review the day… …feeling good!
What is your guilty pleasure?
It has to be taking brown sugar in my coffee.
What was the last good book you read?
Jason Fox – Life Under Fire.
Where is your favourite place to be?
The Black Sea – Bulgaria, as I have always thoroughly enjoyed the sights, sounds and cuisine of the country!
How do you relax after a hard day at work?
I relax by playing some tennis, watching sport with friends and spending time with my family… …and going for a walk.
What makes you smile the most?
My dad’s very witty one-liners!
Then realising that whilst we run around taking ourselves so seriously and making our lives overly complicated… …our pets just walk, eat, sleep, defecate and look very content with their lot!
How is the company planning to adapt to changing industry trends (e.g. technology, regulations)?
Goss is always adopting new technology. For example, we are now introducing a new digitalised project management system and implementing ISO14001. I think sustainability regulations will continue to grow. Rightly so, and the digital world is here to stay.
No organisation can stand still; it’s always a balance of following the trends without losing focus on the core strengths and activities of your organisation. There will always be a need for integrating and implementing systems consistent with that core while consistently getting better all around!
What would you want to be if you weren’t the MD of Goss Environmental Coatings?
A ballet dancer!
