Goss Coatings were delighted to have been invited to undertake specialist painting services for King’s College London, a long standing and valued client. This complex project required our team to approach the work with a focus on delivering an exceptionally high level of paint finish whilst maintaining stringent health and safety procedures in an eight floor stairwell.

Painting an iconic building

King’s College London was founded in 1829 and has grown to become one of the most renowned and prestigious Universities and Research Centres in the world.

Originally known as Cornwall House, the Franklin-Wilkins Building, forms part of the Waterloo Campus and was built between 1912 and 1915. The structure is a reinforced-concrete and was the headquarters building for Her Majesty’s Stationary Office.

The building is now home to London Dental Education Centre (LonDEC), which is part of the Dental Institute (also at Guy’s and Denmark Hill) as well as study areas, the Franklin-Wilkins Library and a restaurant and cafe.

Specialist painting services

The project required our team to paint walls and ceilings, including masking, preparation, application, completion, de-masking and final handover. Skirting boards were also freshened up at the same time. The areas the project covered included the lift lobbies and stairwells at Waterloo Bridge wing. This area is the connecting zone at the Franklin-Wilkins Building.

The works were spread over eight different levels and had to be carried out over several weekends in order to minimise disruption to our client. We regularly liaised with the excellent Bougyues building facilities team to ensure that the painting work was carried out during times of least footfall and pedestrian activity.

Stairwells are always tricky working environments. They require specialist contractors to safely manage the areas and execute works efficiently and professionally. A full risk assessment was undertaken for the erection of stair towers and a method statement submitted, prior to the work commencing. Experience in carrying out these risk assessments is an essential stage for this type of project.

Colour matching paints

We had to ensure the paints we used were of the highest quality and perfectly matched to the existing colour scheme. The two paint colours chosen were a white for the bulk of the surfaces and a striking ‘Kings Pink’ to match incumbent lift lobbies.

In order to ensure that the perfect colour match was made, we took a sample of the existing feature wall surface and had this digitally ‘matched’ by our colleagues at DULUX, AKZO NOBEL. The paints were then mixed and delivered to us without affecting the project’s timeline. Two coats of Vinyl Matt of the pink and white were applied to all lobby feature wall surfaces. It is this attention to detail that was an important factor in achieving the high quality finish our client expects.

Following the completion of the works and our final handover, both the client and the contractor were delighted with the result, and we have received the following feedback:

“Could you pass on my thanks to the team for the work that was carried out, very happy with all the work and communications I have had with you guys at Goss Coatings. I look forward to continuing our work together.”

Although Goss are more widely known for our ongoing hygienic coatings, hygienic cladding and wall protection work, we continue to offer fast track painting services for our clients and customers. We are pleased to say that we have been providing these high quality painting services to our clients for over 34 years. We continue to work extensively and continually with the highest quality specialist manufacturers of premium quality specialist construction products such as Akzo Nobel; Sika, Construction Specialities, Altro and Trovex.

Hygienic Cladding

We are delighted to announce that we have won a Completion Award for our work with Kier Construction.

Early in 2021, Goss Coatings were chosen to work with Kier, to supply and install highly specialist hygienic coatings and fibreglass finishes to a mock up facility for the UK Health Security Agency.

Our commitment to delivering the highest quality hygienic coatings and our professionalism were the driving factors to Goss Coating’s instruction on the project, via the main contractor Kier Strategic Projects. We were also delighted to be working alongside our good partner Ancorite who were appointed to install the resin floors.

Kier Construction (Strategic Projects), Construction Manager, Robert Wilson kindly said that our award was “for the outstanding work that was carried out and the dedication shown by Goss”.

George Goss went on to say “It is great to receive this award and to be recognised for our contribution to this UKHSA project. This was a challenging and very detailed job, which was carried out in complicated times, but we completed the installation of all the hygienic coating both on time and to the highest of standards.”

George later added “As a Company and as individuals, we appreciate receiving the award enormously and understand how important it is to be recognised for the quality of our work.”

We would like to thank Kier for this recognition. We believe the project went so well because it was a well-resourced, managed, organised site and the communications were excellent. It really makes all the difference.

UPDATE 31 January 2022: Further Donation

Following the successful donation and installation of BioClad to Gratitude Distribution Hub, we have recently provided another donation to this worthy charity. To help with the renovation of the on site kitchen, Goss Coatings have donated more materials: Trovex White hygienic cladding. The addition of this cladding will provide a much improved environment for the team that run services at the charity, making kitchen cleaning and hygiene that much easier to maintain.

Our September 2021 Project

In September 2021, Goss Coatings were approached by a local charity “Gratitude”. The charity were in the process of converting a garage that forms part of Gratitude’s Hub building in Borehamwood. The aim was to convert the garage into a hygienic fit for purpose food standard distribution hub in time for pre-Christmas donations.

Gratitude Charity Hygienic Cladding Installation

Who do Gratitude help?

Gratitude is a local charity that supply free groceries, children’s clothes, baby pushchairs and other emergency supplies to the needy of all nationalities and walks of life. All the donations they receive are put-to-use with nothing wasted. Further, any leftover or expired food is given to the local farmer for animal feed in exchange for freshly grown produce.

The building was to be upgraded to be able to serve, receive and despatch donated bulk produce including: groceries, meat, fish, chilled dairy, fruit/veg and to house a walk-in chiller and fridges etc.

For Gratitude to be able to undertake this type of work, the garage needed to be turned into a hygienic and food standard environment.

Typically, early Autumn is a busy time for Goss, but despite our busy schedule, we worked hard and found a way to help the charity out.

BioClad Hygienic Wall Cladding – fit for food

To help Gratitude develop their new facility, we were able to donate and install BioClad hygienic cladding to the walls of the refitted food storage and loading bay area. BioClad offers a selection of hygienic cladding and wall protection systems. BioClad wall cladding can be installed in almost any environment to form a smooth, cleanable, hygienic surface. We felt this would deliver the ideal solution for Gratitude. One of our trained, certified installers fitted the BioClad hygienic cladding to fit into the Gratitude refurbishment schedule.

Sikafloor® and Sikagard Hygienic Coatings – complete the hygienic space

In addition to the hygienic cladding and to provide a fully hygienic workspace, we also donated Sikafloor® epoxy floor coatings to complete hygienic finish. Sika® floor coatings is often used in workspaces where health and safety are vital. We were also able to provide the client with some FOC Sikagard hygienic wall coatings to finish the upper wall areas and ceiling surfaces which were not cladded.

As the Sikagard® hygienic coatings range meet all relevant health and safety standards and regulations in food production facilities, we felt this provided the highest standards of hygiene for Gratitude’s new facility.

Under normal conditions, the commercial value of works, hygienic materials and miscellaneous materials, would be circa £5,000. It was our pleasure to donate the full cost of the works to help support the good cause that Gratitude charity provide.

The opening of this new facility took place in November, including a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony, to which we were delighted to be able to attend. There were also many other local businesses (who helped make this project happen) as well as a local politician who attended the opening.

The whole Goss Coatings team are very proud to have been a part of such an amazing transformation of a garage to fully functioning and hygienic food supply facility.

We are sure, in these challenging times, the Gratitude services must be invaluable.

Issue

Whether you own a cat or a dog, professionals working at pet parlours are the experts you’d call onto for ensuring your pet looks its best. Bathing, brushing, drying, nail trimming, and more, a well-equipped and hygienically safe pet parlour is what you want for your pet.

The challenges these parlours are facing are multiple:
Frequent washing and treatments can subject the walls and floor of the treatment room to excessive water, steam, and product splashes
Scratches, bumps, and minor accidental damage from use
Abrasion and chemical damage from the usage of cleaning products
Everyday wear and tear

Solution

In spring this year, we completed an installation of hygienic cladding to the walls of the treatment room of Charlotte’s Pet Parlour. We’ve worked for RJ O’Neill Property Services who were overseeing the project and provided guidance. RJ ONeill Property services are a family-run business with a wealth of experience, supremely focused on exceeding the customer’s expectations. We enjoyed working with them as our work ethos aligns with theirs and we were confident we will be able to deliver the best work, on time and on budget.

Installing Trovex Diamond ‘Stone’ (from the Ambience range) and ‘Monsoon’ (Radiance range)
, our team has fitted the hygienic cladding strictly as per the manufacturer’s recommendations. The installation was executed to the highest standard, fixed with two-pack adhesive for maximum longevity. The team ensured the corners were seamlessly protected by thermoforming the sheets and welding them together for a high quality seamless hygienic finish.

Advice, Products, Trovex

Issue

It’s often not about banging up 100 sheets a week. Regular clients need tailor-made (and often) imaginative solutions for issues in the buildings, often involving ingenuity and retrofitting.

In this instance, our good long-standing pharmaceutical client in Hertfordshire cladded the (previously tiled) wall surfaces in their changing rooms, as part of a refurbishment project, with Trovex Diamond hygienic cladding (welded and thermoformed) – undertaken by Goss – and installed new lockers and cubicles.

However, due to a design oversight, there was a void left in the corners where the lockers met (see below) and the client was concerned this was an ongoing dirt trap in a facility where the utmost levels of cleanliness and hygiene are critical in all areas.

Solution

  • During a facility shut down, Goss Environmental Coatings Ltd cladding teams (Trovex Select Installer) delivered on the entire project:
  • Liaised with the client
  • Re-entered the area
  • Dismantled and removed the lockers in the target rooms (4 changing areas)
  • Built a stud framework
  • Re-cladded with Trovex Diamond
  • Replaced the lockers
  • Reworked the ceiling tiles
  • Re-siliconed, with minimum disruption to the client’s ongoing operations, all during a short duration shutdown period
  • All sheets were fixed with two-pack adhesive, thermoformed and welded
  • All materials were sourced directly from the proprietary manufacturer.

Goss Environmental Coatings have worked for this client for over 10 years, performing new works and ongoing reactive and planned maintenance and participating in major shutdown works, at least once or twice a year, supplying and installing hygienic cladding, hygienic coatings, wall protection and undertaking fast-track decorating works.

If you have shutdowns and need a reliable company to serve your hygienic finishes needs during shutdown periods, the Goss team is here to help!

We’re experts in hygienic cladding; hygienic coatings and wall protection, with over 31 years of experience in this field, we are confident we will be able to fulfill your requirements, on budget and on time. We’re emerging on the other side of the pandemic, creating the ‘new normal’ but there are some things that don’t change, like the need to keep schools and learning environments clean, hygienic and at the same time visually appealing and pleasant for children and staff to spend time in.

Schools have had to change many aspects of their everyday operations, like installing hand sanitizing stations and providing new signage respecting the requirements of strict rules under which they were allowed to reopen again. Hygienic cladding is the perfect answer to many demands of the school environment and thanks to its versatility and flexibility, it can be used in myriad ways.

Washrooms and toilets

These areas are under tight scrutiny and subject to even more rigorous cleaning schedules, due to their high frequency of use. Hygienic cladding can be used in splashbacks behind sinks, or vanity units, as it is highly cleanable and can be perfectly moulded to fit even the most awkward places. We’ve seen its usage behind dryers, as it doesn’t succumb to any deformation from the heat of the dryer unit and therefore forms the protection for the wall behind as well as providing an easily cleanable surface and also, of course, to provide cleanable surfaces around urinal areas.

Thanks to the large range of vibrant colours, hygienic cladding is especially good to use in environments frequented by younger children.

Changing Areas

Sports and changing rooms areas are in need of particularly hardwearing and hygienic wall cladding due to a great potential for knocks and scrapes and the presence of mud and grime after outdoor sporting activities. The wall hygienic cladding can be seamlessly joined with the floor covering, without cracks of crevices. This does make it perfect for deep clean and strict cleaning routines.

Kitchen and adjoining areas

Ideally, we recommend that kitchens are clad at full height, all the way around, as this achieves more hygienic finish.  The exception is the area behind cookers, where stainless

steel sheets are more appropriate, as hygienic cladding should not  be directly exposed to temperatures higher than 60C.

In our recent project, working in the school eatery and serving room at a school in Buckinghamshire, the team has used Trovex hygienic cladding to cover the walls at full height, also providing hygienic cladding under the servery opening on both sides. This is particularly important as this area is likely to be damaged by potential spilled food, accidental kicks or dents from the many feet walking by and is subject to rigorous cleaning regimes and often harsh chemicals. Fortunately, hygienic cladding is the perfect product for this task, when applied by a highly skilled professional team.

Hygiene rooms

Hygienic cladding has been well used in hygiene rooms such as first aid rooms at schools. The rooms have to be ready for any kind of emergency and can also be used as a waiting room for an unwell student or a member of staff. In these situations, the hygienic cladding has to fit the bill as both hygiene and protection option but also from the design point of view, by creating a calm and soothing atmosphere. Altro Digiclad may be a great option in such environments also!

Classrooms and labs

Whether you’re looking to improve the splashbacks in Science labs, walls in Food Technology rooms or an overall spruce up in Arts & Design classrooms, hygienic cladding can cover all design requests. One of our suppliers, Trovex, has done a wonderful update of the Food Technology room and shower area at Kingshott School in Hitchin. All internal walls have been cladded in Trovex Diamond for maximum cleanability and hygiene.

Wall protection and corner protection in corridors and heavy traffic areas

Hygienic cladding is supremely mouldable and it can be used to cover half or a whole wall. We’ve also seen and applied hygienic cladding on the pillars and corners in high footfall areas, like hallways or entry ways. Doors and plaster boards surfaces in particular can see serious use and be damaged by everyday traffic of people. We’ve used Altro Fortis in our projects, to provide valuable protection for walls and it is also lower maintenance than painting and upkeep providing important lifecycle cost benefits.. Altro Fortis Titanium is dense, impervious to scuffs and dents and thanks to its lightly textured surface keeps looking fresher for longer. It is a great solution for schools looking to invest in a robust but good looking product that will keep the maintenance costs down.

Bespoke Work

We’ve installed Altro Whiterock Satin and Digiclad, in a creative design of a running man and a leaping gymnast at a private school in North London. These designs on the hygienic cladding are unusual and definitely eye catching. We always enjoy working with designers and our customers’ concepts to deliver a vision very specific and tailored to their needs.

Other examples of favoured bespoke work would include: school logos, mottos, branded artwork, wall signage with specific design to match with the overall school image

Many of our teams are DBS accredited to work in the education sector and GOSS are experienced and capable of working to tight schedules. We understand how challenging it is, to carry out a project whilst ensuring that the school operates as normal – or, in these strange times, as per the new normal! We will work with you on design, deliverables and the fine details, ensuring your hygienic cladding project will be all you’ve wanted and completed to the highest quality finish.

Advice

The pandemic has swept across the whole world, starting in late 2019 and becoming part of our lives from then on. The new hygienic measures introduced by governments to keep the nations of the world safe (and prevent further increase in numbers) are many and have caused a number of potential complications for businesses but also for our everyday lives.

We’ve looked at a few businesses and areas of everyday life to observe just how hygienic is the post-covid world.

Home
For many, their homes became not only their places of rest and relaxation but also their workplaces. The requirement to stay at home and work from home wherever feasible has redefined the way we’re keeping our homes hygienic.

Regular cleaning and disinfection of high touch surfaces with soap or detergent and water have become part of the everyday cleaning routine. High touch surfaces include worktops, tables and computer keyboards but also door handles, handrails, bathroom surfaces, taps, phones, tablets, remote controls, game controllers and favourite toys.

Always ensure to wipe the cleaning product off and follow up with disinfectant. For electronic devices, we use alcohol wipes to avoid damaging the electronics.

Hygienic cladding is a fantastic solution for those areas in your home where there’s heavy traffic, frequent and rigorous cleaning and where hygienic upkeep can often be quite time-consuming. Thanks to its highly cleanable surface, hygienic cladding applied by expert professionals such as our teams at Goss provides protection yet cleanability for your bathrooms, kitchen splashbacks, mudrooms or garages.

Schools and Child Care
Schools and child care had to adopt new guidelines and practices of cleaning, disinfection and hand hygiene to help reduce the risk of exposure and spread of coronavirus. Hygienically clean signage and notices have been implemented, in corridors, classrooms and communal areas, specifically informing students and staff about correct mask-wearing practices and hand hygiene.

Some schools have made use of the temporary lockdowns to update their surface coatings with new easy-to-clean paints that are ideal for frequent cleaning and increased maintenance schedules and have installed hygienic cladding and wall protection in areas such as washroom, toilets and changing areas.

Additionally, we’ve observed there’s been inquiries about classroom specific projects: hygienic cladding for splashbacks in art classes and food tech classes, labs and science classes requiring hygienic wall paint and cladding solutions for the sink areas and heavy traffic areas. The time pressure on finishing all the upgrades in time for schools reopening have emphasised the need for a team of professional installers like Goss Environmental Coatings to ensure the projects are finished in a timely manner and in the highest long-lasting quality.

Leisure and communal life
Many indoor sports and leisure facilities have had to adapt to new hygienic requirements and implement one-way travel systems for their members to ensure the natural flow of pedestrian traffic, allow for social distancing and adhere to government requirements.

Parks, open spaces and outdoor playgrounds have become the new centres of communal living, under the update hygienic guidelines. Targeted use of disinfectant on frequently touched surfaces such as handrails and benches, combined with discouraging gatherings of large groups of people to comply with social distancing has allowed playgrounds to remain open or partially open during the pandemic.

Restrooms and washrooms remained open, wherever possible, supplied with handwashing products and regularly cleaned by attending staff. More regimented and rigorous cleaning schedules have been implemented, especially on the most frequently touched surfaces and more robust fabrics, coatings and wall protection systems have been utilized to withstand these increasingly aggressive cleaning regimes.

We’ve recently completed hygienic cladding works on a brand new PureGym in Chelmsford, using Jemiclad, high quality advanced Hygienic PVC system, in the shower, changing and restroom areas.

This forward-looking gym provider (with over 250 sites in the UK), expanding aggressively and rapidly in the UK (even in these difficult and uncertain times), have expanded their facilities and site locations, extensively utilising high-quality hygienic cladding systems in strategic coatings. The facilities look great, they use a selection of brand coherent colours, and impervious cleanable welded and thermoformed sheets meet all hygienic requirements and will last a long time – minimising downtime and disruption to these facilities in the future.

Travelling
Whether for pleasure or for business, travel has taken a huge blow in the pandemic. Lockdowns and following quarantine requirements have forced many travel providers to rethink the safety and hygienic conditions of the travel environments.

The rule to use when deciding where to travel and how to get there is to assess how easy it is to comply with the hygienic restrictions and safety protocols of all your travel points.

Travel by plane, long considered to be one of the most challenging due to concerns over the quality of air and proximity of other travellers, has experienced a thorough overhaul. Hygienic measures taken in the departures hall, increased allowance of hand sanitiser gel in your hand luggage, temperature checkpoints and compulsory face mask are only some of the new rules designed to protect the travellers while allowing the travel.

Airlines implemented safety questionnaires and many countries now require a negative covid test to grant access rights.

Within the airports there are one way systems and social distancing marking on the floors, together with new shields, signage, hand sanitising stations and individual business have implemented additional safety precautions to ensure the risk of spreading the virus is kept to a minimum.

At Goss Environmental Coatings we’ve noticed interest from train companies, who have reacted swiftly to the demand of post-covid travel and looked at hygienic cladding as a viable option for the refurbishment of high traffic areas, such as waiting rooms, washrooms and travel corridors. Moreover, one of the biggest advantages of hygienic cladding is that when properly installed by a team of cladding experts, it provides supreme resistance against accidental impacts such as from trolley wheels or luggage handles.

Our world after covid has undergone great changes, some would say there is no return to normal as we all have to reassess our individual set up and ensure healthy and hygienic future steps. Take extra precautions where necessary, to protect those at increased risk of contracting the virus.

The professional and friendly team at Goss Environmental Coatings can take on any project and deliver it to exact timing requirements, especially if you are looking to re-open your business after a lockdown. We provide a holistic approach – hygienic cladding systems, wall protection, coatings and hygienic paints, creating a complete high quality clean and cleanable hygienic surface solution.

Personal

January is a month of new beginnings, fresh starts, marvelling at how far we’ve come and looked into the future. At the end of 2020, after one of the most challenging years in all our histories, it seemed like a great idea to reflect on the journey of Goss Environmental Coatings ltd

Our founder, Mike Goss, has worked in the specialist coatings business all his life. From an apprenticeship with British Railways in the ‘60s, through major coatings manufacturing companies’ technical services and marketing departments and then as a consultant to a number of other major projects and coatings companies both in the UK and overseas.

Gaining a lot of experience after working with several contractors, consultants and direct for pharmaceutical research companies, Mike has identified that there was a very real need and demand for a specialised coatings installation/application company with a difference. The company would both correctly interpret and identify the requirements of the medical, pharmaceutical and research sectors who demand effective and long performing coatings. Furthermore, it’s been deemed crucial to install those systems in a timely fashion and correctly the first time.

The importance of getting the job done both expeditiously and correctly has considerable benefits in the world of the clients we are referring to.

Research work is often long term and the integrity and cleanliness of the building it is being conducted in is of paramount importance. A forced shutdown during a drug development programme due to contamination would be disastrous as the whole programme may need to be aborted. The cost is unimaginable. Also, in, say, surgical operating theatres the minimization of “lost” time is of upmost importance and the cost of lost facility time is the loss of a great deal of revenue and wasted resources to the hospitals, not to mention the human cost of postponing life-improving operations.

Goss Environmental Coatings Ltd (GECL) was created with this knowledge and a clearly identified and recognized demand.

Early clients were GlaxoSmithKline, Ely Lilly, Merck Sharpe and Dome, Ciba Giegy and the like. Mike Goss and his team began by installing specialist coatings into the clients’ research facilities and production areas. GECL also worked with major contractors, specialist contractors and facilities management companies who were constructing and maintaining these facilities.

In the medical field, GECL tackled operating theatre departments in both the NHS and private sectors. Major NHS teaching hospitals were provided for as well as the private groups such as BUPA, BMI, Hospital Corporation of America – HCA (both at home and overseas). Our fast, accurate and long-lasting installations have been utilized in university research departments in, for example: Cambridge, Oxford, London University College,  Bristol, Bath, Exeter, Aberystwyth and many others. We often work through and over weekends and holidays to facilitate our clients’ emergency requirements if and as required.

Our company was built on strong values of planning, getting it right the first time and without undue fuss. These values and our reputation has helped to grow the business have grown by word of mouth and by trading on our reputation.

GECL was passed over to George Goss in 2004 and under his guidance and diligence has grown and prospered with additional innovation and diversity. Loyal teams of highly skilled, motivated operatives have been trained and kept, all embracing the company’s original philosophy and aims.  Administration and systems have adopted the latest methodology. We continue to be the company to provide environmental finishes, both coatings and cladding to discerning clients, first time to the highest standards, without fuss at a fair price for a high quality service.

George had worked extensively with Goss Environmental Coatings whilst at school and university and then departed for a period of extensive sales and marketing work abroad, working for large blue-chip international organisations across the globe. As the first decade of the 21st century came to an end and already firmly embedded at the helm of Goss, George identified a clear shift in the cleanroom and medical sector towards the use of high-performance hygienic cladding systems (Altro Whiterock and Trovex etc) alongside or in lieu of specialist hygienic coatings and he forged strong relationships with some of the strongest manufacturers in these sectors such as Altro, Trovex, Sika and Construction Specialities.

He developed specialised teams in both the hygienic coatings and hygienic cladding / wall protection sectors, exploring opportunities in both fields and also extended services to other customer areas, likewise requiring such technologies, such as education, food and beverage manufacturing , leisure and hospitality.

In 2020 Olga Goss fully joined the team of established key personnel, some of whom has been with the company for longer than 15 years. Olga has an international sales and marketing background and is instrumental in assisting the coordination of the exponentially increasing enquiries (from repeat clients, new customers and contractors) for high-quality hygienic coatings and hygienic cladding installations delivered to a high standard, on time and at competitive prices.

In 2020 / 2021 GECL have been heavily involved in strategic COVID related work, testing centres, research facilities and, more recently, manufacturing units.

Since 1988, GECL has witnessed economic turbulence, been involved in strategic work related to research into the various, animal or human medical emergencies (Foot and Mouth, SARS, Bird Flu, Ebola) but, as all of us, have never quite experienced anything such as the disruption caused by Covid in 2020!! It’s created challenges and opportunities but, through weathering this storm as a unified organisation, Goss Environmental Coatings has become a stronger, more technologically advanced, adaptable and versatile company.

As a family and a business we believe in diligence, integrity and focus – on doing our best to develop our core – work with great suppliers, operatives, employees, clients and customers and continue to supply and install high quality surface protection systems – hygienic cladding, hygienic coatings and wall protection – making the buildings of our country more hygienic, attractive and safe!

Advice
Traditional hygienic coatings, conventionally and spray applied, have their place in many areas of specialist construction projects and are an ideal choice for the majority of facilities and areas which require these high-performance products. They cope with every day wear-and-tear activities, including light mechanical impacts and regular cleaning regimes.

But, some areas require a more robust and chemically resistant high-performance hygienic coating system in order to meet their performance criteria (ie containment facilities, areas with aggressive cleaning regimes and areas where more impact on the walls is likely). Fibreglass reinforcement offers an extra level of robustness / chemical resistance and can be suitable for a wide range of operations and environments where extra protection is required!

There are various high-performance hygienic coating systems available, utilising fibreglass reinforcement such as:

  • Sika Sikagard AL12 Reemat Heavy system
  • Sika Sikagard AL11 Reemat Lite system
  • CS Wallglaze FG light systems – Walllflex, Armourglaze
  • CS Wallfglaze FG heavy systems – Wallflex, Armourglaze

The properties of our hygienic fibreglass systems help resolve numerous design challenges, whilst improving long term maintenance / lifecycle costs and hygienic performance. Here is top 10 reasons to use fibreglass reinforcement for your next installation:-

1. Maximum Hygiene – tanking to form fully sealed and seamless surfaces free of trims and joints. This prevents surfaces from having crevices which harbour bacteria and mould.

2. Easy to Clean – These robust, seamless, chemically resistant surfaces are easy to clean and will withstand robust cleaning regimes.

3. Colour stable– Two-pack polyurethane systems such as CS Armourglaze and CS Wallglaze are extremely colour stable, minimising the issue of fade or discolouration in situ.

4. Strong & Durable – Fully reinforced fibreglass coating systems are robust and tough, built for long service.

5. Low Maintenance – Fibreglass system provides high resilience and robustness and does not require so much overpainting, freshening up as per conventional paint systems

6. Economical – Always consider the lifecycle costs. We have been back to FG jobs which were done 25 years ago and have NEVER been recoated and are in fighting fit form and still meeting their performance criteria. All very well putting a conventional coating on the wall but consider: how often do you paint it? What are the down time costs?

7. Aesthetically attractive – Fibreglass reinforced systems can be top-coated with most BS or RAL topcoat colours

8. Power washable and Steam cleanable – Many fibreglass systems (installed correctly) can be power washed and steam cleaned effectively if applied to the correct specification

9. Chemically resistant – Fibreglass reinforced two-pack polyurethane, epoxy, acrylic systems can withstand chemical cleaning, fumigants and decontamination regimes that conventional paints will not

10. Resistant to cracking and flaking – Fibreglass systems are less prone to cracking than conventional coating systems and, indeed, may bridge cracks which occur in the substrate (depending on nature and size of the issue) – again, minimising the need for invasive emergency shut down works and repairs and providing critical resilience in containment laboratories.

From beautiful design to high performance and everything in between, fibreglass reinforced systems offer many advantages to our customers, especially in the field of hygiene and cleaning. Taking into account how economical these systems are, also adds to the list of advantages of fibreglass coating systems.

The friendly and professional team at Goss Environmental Coatings are trusted installers of fibreglass and can deliver any project to exact timings, especially important when operating in line with your business schedule. If you’d like to know more, please contact us today and we will be happy to answer any questions.

Advice

How is the pandemic affecting our schools?

The current pandemic has changed the world of education in ways many couldn’t have foreseen. According to UNICEF, at the height of the pandemic, “approximately 91% of the world’s students in more than 194 countries were out of school.” Now that the schools have been re-opening again, we are looking at ways schools have adapted their environments to be hygienically safe.

Despite the considerable disruption of the pandemic, the upcoming half-term break could be used to further future-proof the school environments with the use of hygienic coatings and hygienic wall cladding. The measures put in place to make it safe for pupils to learn again include handwashing stations, physical distancing, contactless temperature checks and mask-wearing. These also mean there are changes made to the common areas, indoor and outdoor. Half-term break offers the perfect time to adapt the environments fast and effectively without sacrificing further learning time.

Clear messaging and signage

Whether it is markers on the floor showing the appropriate social distancing, signage displaying adequate handwashing procedure or arrows pointing to the one-way systems, hygienic wall cladding can be customized to suit the specific requirements of the school. Furthermore, it can be made school-specific by including logos, badges and lettering. Altro ‘Digiclad’ or Trovex ‘Gallery’ are fast to install, hardwearing and have a hygienic finish that is suited for frequent cleaning.

Adapting the common areas

Canteens, hallways, washrooms, classrooms – all areas of high footfall requiring extra attention in the pandemic times. Slightly matt finish of Altro Fortis Titanium and Trovex Resilience can provide strong protection against inevitable scuffs and marks caused by high usage. When complemented by hygienic wall protection system, it can be retrofitted over tiles, allowing for even faster coverage and protection.

Complying with new hygiene requirements

The schools now need to check the temperature of students, staff and visitors. This is done by contactless scanners distributed along the corridors and in halls. The frequent disinfection and handwashing stations require an upgrade of bathrooms with extra areas for sanitizer distribution. Splashbacks can be used in these environments, as they scale down easily from their industrial use. Perfect for the small areas behind sinks, small handwashing basins and behind antibacterial gel dispensers, splashbacks provide the ideal alternative for tiles and grouting.
